Switchgear Field Engineer – Level 3 - Minneapolis, MN

Job description

The Level 3 Switchgear Field Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical switchgear systems in the field. This role requires technical expertise and hands-on experience with switchgear ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electrical equipment at customer sites. The engineer will serve as a technical lead, providing guidance to junior staff and collaborating with clients to resolve complex issues.



Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on switchgear and related electrical systems.

  • Complete commissioning and testing procedures for new and upgraded / retrofit switchgear installations.

  • Interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and company protocols during all field operations.

  • Document service activities, generate technical reports, and communicate findings to clients and project teams.

  • Mentor and support Level 1 and Level 2 field engineers, sharing best practices and technical knowledge.

  • Travel to various customer sites as required, sometimes on short notice, to address urgent system issues.


Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience with switchgear systems or power generation systems, medium voltage preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety standards and field service protocols.

  • Ability to work independently and lead technical projects in the field.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs.

  • Willingness to work outdoors and in challenging environments.

  • Comfortable with extended periods of standing, bending, and climbing.


Base pay of $80K-$85K (non-exempt) + OT and company truck - Previous switchgear or power generation systems experience is required.
